Toter Bin Distribution Now In Effect The City of Stamford is distributing this Toter cart to residents to make collection easier for you and for the workers who collect your garbage each week. We hope that you will find this cart a convenience. This cart is designed to be extremely durable, to withstand very hot and very cold weather, and to keep animals out. Many communities use them across the country and have found that they make garbage disposal and collection easier and neater, with less litter and less odor than conventional cans. In addition, they can be emptied into our trucks automatically using a hydraulic device, keeping our workers safer from injuries that can result from lifting heavy garbage cans.
The toter we are issuing to each household has a capacity of 96 gallons and is designed to hold about 7 kitchen-sized garbage bags. A smaller 64-gallon model is available upon request that will hold about 5 bags, but we encourage you to try the larger model first for a few weeks before you call us. Smaller carts can be ordered through our Citizens’ Service Center at 977-4140 or on-line at www.cityofstamford.org. Additional carts will be made available at our cost – about $70 depending on size – once we have distributed one to every household. Check on-line at www.cityofstamford.org in late October for more information. Unfortunately we cannot recycle old garbage containers. We encourage you to re-use your old containers, but we will collect them if you wish to throw them out. Simply place any old containers at the curb alongside your new Toter cart and we will dispose of it. In using your new cart, please observe these important rules: - Once you receive this Toter cart, we will no longer accept garbage placed in any other containers.
- The Toter must be placed curbside for collection with the arrow on the lid pointing toward the street. The location where your Toter cart was left is the same place where it should be placed for garbage collection.
- After collection, it is your responsibility to remove the cart from the curb and place it in a suitable storage area.
- Please also place your blue and grey recycling bins near the cart.
- Please read and follow the enclosed directions on how to use and maintain this cart.
Thank you for your cooperation with this new program. If you have any questions about garbage or recycling, please call the Solid Waste division at 977-4117.
