Required Heating Of Rental Units

Although there are no scheduled turn on dates for heating, every Stamford landlord is required to provide heating facilities which are properly installed, maintained in safe and working condition and capable of safely and adequately heating all of the apartment's living areas and bathrooms.

If your heat goes out the first thing you should do is call your landlord. If your landlord fails to fix the problem within a reasonable amount of time, you should call the Housing Code Enforcement Division of the Health Department at 977- 4366 for an immediate inspection and further assistance, if necessary.

When the inspector arrives, he or she will determine if there is a code violation. If there is, the inspector will notify your landlord of the violation, and specify a time period for it to be corrected. If the inspector considers the situation to be an emergency, i.e. one that must be fixed immediately, he may order the landlord to vacate the apartment. If this happens, you will be referred to the City's relocation officer for temporary re-housing at the landlord's expense.
